Film festival producers in the time of COVID-19 have had to get creative to keep their events up and running and make participation meaningful for filmmakers and audiences alike. But what if the festival is actually the 48 Hour Film Project and people need to make a short film on a short timeframe while also keeping COVID-compliant?  We found out more at our October meeting!

Our Presenters

Robyn Sarvis and Duane Trammell are producers for the San Diego 48 Hour Film Project. This annual competition pits filmmaking teams against the clock to make the best short film they can using their randomly assigned genre and the required elements that all teams share. But the competition weekend is just the start for Robyn and Duane, because then it’s a mad dash to take the submitted films, send the qualifying ones off to judges, organize screenings in local movie theatres, and prep awards in time for a “purple carpet” gala to celebrate the best films.

Then came COVID-19 and all in-person meetings, screenings, and the entire filmmaking process had to be re-invented.

Duane and Robyn were joined by some local filmmakers who participated in this year’s event, to discuss how festival producers are adapting to these changing times and how cast and crew approached the unique challenge of the competition while also keeping their teams safe.
