Can YOU hear me now?
Any audio professional will tell you that sound is more than half the project! That's why we are devoting a full day to our next educational workshop called From Set to Soundtrack: The Art and Science of Sound.
On Saturday, April 27, 2024, we will talk about how great audio is a combination of solid location sound, foley, sound design, and music. This will be followed by a panel conversation about what film directors need to know to best communicate with their sound teams.
Our speakers include Joanna Fang (Foley Artist - Sony), Jules Rascon (Sound Designer - Sony), M.G. Espar (San Diego City College - Film Composer) and Alexandra Parral (Sound Recordist - freelance).
Join us at Studio West, San Diego’s premier recording studio, also home to audio education center, The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) for an amazing program with multiple sessions and demonstrations.
This event is being produced in conjunction with the San Diego Section of the Audio Engineering Society. Thank you to the AES!

Joanna Fang is an Emmy award winning Foley artist and sound editor. An alumna of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Joanna fell in love with sound design and Foley during her studies and, after graduating with honors in 2014, immediately started apprenticing and performing under the guidance of esteemed Foley artist Leslie Bloome at Alchemy Post Sound in Peekskill, NY. In 2021, Joanna transitioned into game development and began working for Sony Playstation where she currently co-leads their new Foley department and is their first in-house Foley Artist in over 15 years. Through her decade in Foley, she has had the privilege of swinging axes in God of War Ragnarök, hunting misogynists in Promising Young Woman, and even crashing a bus for Ira Glass on This American Life.
Joanna's Foley art spans across several media from traditional narrative films, documentaries, and television series to triple A games, virtual reality and sound art. In 2016, she was recognized by the Television Academy as the first openly transgender woman of color to win a Primetime Emmy for her Foley and sound editorial work on A&E’s Cartel Land.
Juliet Rascon is a Senior Sound Designer entering her 8th year at Sony PlayStation. Her work can be heard in titles such as God of War Ragnarok, Spider Man 2, Death Stranding, Demon's Souls and many others. Born in Tijuana, B.C. and now based in in San Diego, she has a background in audio engineering with a focus on sound design for video games.
Alexandra Parral, is a freelance Location Sound Mixer who recently won her first Emmy Award by her participation at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. She has worked around the world recording athletes and celebrities. From films to documentaries, she has been requested to work as a sound recordist at the Tokyo Olympics, Russia, Beijing Olympics and the Tour de France. She was born in San Diego and raised in Mexico.
M.G. Espar is a composer, music producer and educator. His music has been featured in films screened at Lincoln Center and the Sundance Film Festival, and in theaters and concert halls around the country. Notable projects include an ominous orchestral score for The Man Who Would Be Polka King (truTV), epic Latin/symphonic textures for Mamachas del Ring (Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival), and a swirling collage of noise-rock guitar and electronic percussion for indie feature Altamont Now (Winner, Best Narrative, Arizona Underground Film Festival). He has also composed commercial music for high-profile clients including Heineken, Levis, Fruit of the Loom and Ford Models and produced independent pop and rock artists.
Espar uses the media arts to empower, inspire and build community through his work as an Assistant Professor of Music at San Diego City College where he teaches music history and music production technology.
Our moderator for the day is Steve Barsotti, President of the San Diego section of the Audio Engineering Society (AES).
Steve Barsotti is an educator, audio artist and audio post engineer who has been in the field for almost 30 years. His courses have covered a wide variety of audio related topics from commercial music and film production to unconventional techniques. He taught at Columbia College in Chicago, the Art Institute of Seattle, Cornish College of the Arts, The Seattle Film Institute, Shoreline Community College and currently teaches in the San Diego Community College District and John Paul the Great Catholic University.
As owner and operator of Ragmatic Audio, Steve has recorded, mixed and mastered audio for client projects including podcasts, films, music, multimedia art, documentaries, and commercial projects including Vox Media, REI, the Seattle Channel, PBS and others. Ragmatic Audio’s mission is to work with non-profits, small businesses, museums, and more, discovering the untold stories of our culture.
Steve’s work as an audio artist includes performances and compositions in the style of Musique Concréte. His two solo CDs , Along These Lines and Say “tin-tah-pee-mic,” contain improvisations with amplified objects, field recordings, and electronics. His album Rarebit, with Eric Leonardson, features improvisations on invented instruments. His work has been described as “quite cinematic and unsettling,” and as “ushering the listener across an ambient divide.”
