What goes into filming an action sequence with faster than normal movements, fighting characters, quick blocking changes, motion props, and a moving camera with the lens near the actor?

These scenes bring new unfamiliar risks, framing difficulties, unexpected challenges, and unfavorable results unless your Director of Photography and the rest of your crew are practiced in the art of action cinematography.

On Saturday, April 1, San Diego Media Pros in conjunction with The Film Hub are hosting an afternoon workshop on the precision shooting style required for action sequences.

We have lined up two experienced DPs, Jessica Gallant and Angel Brophy, who along with stunt professionals from the Southern California Stunt Crew, will demonstrate shot framing, actor and camera blocking, visual style, stacking and fight choreography.

We’ll even break down basic coverage of a fight scene to meet a tight shoot schedule while keeping safety top of mind.

Speakers

Jessica Gallant is an award-winning cinematographer based in Los Angeles for over 25 years. She has shot over 60 feature films and countless live punk shows, including one feature length punk rock documentary. Jessica taught cinematography at her alma mater Columbia College for two years and has been an administrator on the Cinematography Mailing List (CML) website, a discussion and equipment resource for cinematographers for over 20 years. She is a member of the International Collective of Female Cinematographers (ICFC).

Ángel G. Brophy is a 34-year-old filmmaker from Acapulco. He specializes in action productions, working as an action coordinator and action designer, also taking on the role of stuntmen in various productions. Angel has worked with martial arts legends such as Michael Jai White, Art Camacho and Robert Samuels.

Elias Acosta was born in San Juan, Dominican Republic. At a young age, he showed an interest in filmmaking after his father, a preacher, started to take Elias to see Christian films all over the country. In 1993, Elias worked as a production consultant at Century III, Universal Studios, but the dream was always to return to his home country and work as a producer and director. For the next 15 years, he worked with the largest ad agencies in the country. His work experience led Elias to be part of the development of the film industry in the Dominican Republic today.

Elias sees action films as a genre where the action sequences, such as fighting, stunts, car chases or explosions, take precedence over other elements. But as a cinematographer, he is always prepared to understand the director’s intent for action sequences in any film genre. Comedy is one of Elias’ favorite genres.

Elias studied Media Communications at Goshen College in Indiana and then received a Master’s Degree in Film from Regent University in Virginia Beach.

The Southern California Stunt Crew - Team Clutch is an association of stunt actors and stunt performers dedicated to the practice, promotion and execution of the technical, mental and physical skills required for safe stunt performance in film, streaming, broadcast and theatrical productions. Founded on April Fool's Day 2021 by Shane Alexander and Dan Cheatham II, SCSC members drill regularly in various basic skills such as fight styles, falls, action-acting, staged choreography, and self-marketing. We offer specialized training and instruction, in-house and with outside guest trainers, in various key disciplines such as wire-work, equestrian, swordsmanship, knife-fighting, firearms and tactical movements, archery, martial arts, motorcycle and other disciplines common on screen and stage.
