Last year at this time we were all busy with business as usual: meeting one-on-one with our clients in their offices, setting up meetings in boardrooms and ballrooms, and recording interviews anywhere we wanted to.

But then the pandemic hit, and what was once a process we could do in our sleep became something that caused us to lose sleep. We had to pivot to a remote virtual production process that has come to replace our in-person meetings and recordings.

This shift from live to virtual production has become the new normal for much of what we used to do. Face to face is now Facetime to Facetime. Instead of zooming to get to a shoot, we’re just Zooming.

And while this process has allowed videos and events to safely continue in some fashion, the challenges this new style presents are daunting.

Fortunately for us, SDMP has two experts who are weathering the storm and continue to redefine this virtual process.

Dave Schuety is the owner and lead producer at Voice and Video. Dave, discussed how he’s approached virtual live production and the techniques he’s learned along the way.

We’re also heard from from Tim Flora, owner of K24 Productions, who has developed a production technique for virtual speaker recordings that maintains quality while giving you that virtual presence.

So whether you’re wondering how to produce your annual sales conference over Zoom, or how to record your client’s CEO via Teams, check our YouTube meeting video, if you were not able to make it.

Our Speakers

Dave Schuety

After graduating college with a broadcasting degree, Dave began his career as a production assistant in Los Angeles. He worked through the camera department and into an assistant director position with Fox. After falling in love with San Diego, he left his position at Fox to join the Voice and Video Team.

Schuety started with Voice and Video Rentals in 2008. He started as the warehouse manager and worked his way to General Manager, and ultimately purchased the company along with Jim Kotyk in 2016.

When Covid-19 hit our industry in 2020 and live events were no longer possible, he and Jim joined forces with Bill Lanzarotta and opened two studio locations now being used to produce live virtual events as well as shoot and edit content for those events.

Tim Flora

Tim is the owner of K24 Productions, has been a part of the San Diego production scene since 1996, working for NBC7 and Surfer Magazine before landing and Multi Image Productions for 16 years.

He has extensive experience in Avid and Premiere video editing, Director of Photography roles and post-production management, and has traveled the US and the world plying his craft.

He is familiar being the project lead and interfacing with clients as a director, editor or producer on both large and small projects.

Over the past year, Tim and his team have done multiple virtual-speaker recordings using gear packages shipped across the country.
