How to Know When You are Doing it Right and When You are Breaking the Law

Fair Use. Creative Commons. Licensing. Permissions! Copyrighted materials are part of our world, whether you create commercials, music videos, films, video games or corporate videos.

At this month's meeting, we will dive into the complex world of intellectual property (IP). As media professionals, we create IP. And we use the IP and copyrighted materials of others. We will discuss copyright, fair use, creative commons, licensing and permissions, answering these questions and others:

How can a for-profit project use copyrighted materials legally?
How has technology changed the risk of using copyrighted materials such as music without proper licensing?
What qualifies for fair use and what doesn't and what are common misperceptions?
When licensing stock photography or stock video, what exactly does the license allow the user to do?
When getting permissions, what are the lesser known "gotchas?"
How do you, as a content creator, protect your own projects? How can you potentially monetize your own copyrighted materials?

Our intent is to approach this from an intermediate level of knowledge. Yes, we will define the key terms, but we will quickly dig deeper into hidden risks and how to avoid costly legal mistakes.

New Media Rights is an IP, Privacy and Tech Law nonprofit based here in San Diego and they will lead our discussion. New Media Rights provide legal services, educational resources and public policy advocacy for creators, entrepreneurs and internet users. They are independently funded program of California Western School of Law
